Window Tinting Protects Fish Tanks From Algae Growth

If your fish tank sits in direct sunlight for part or all of the day, a clear UV (Ultra Violet) blocking window film can help keep the tank clean by retarding algae growth. Standard UV-blocking window films will stop nearly all of the suns harmful UV radiation - which many algae require for photosynthesis.

A clear UV window film protects your fish tank from algae growth

Artificial lighting can also be to blame for algae blooms, but if a fish tank receives ANY direct sunlight installing a solar UV blocking window film will help slow the rate of algae growth regardless of other non-solar light sources.

Algae requires UV for photosynthesis. A UV blocking window film denies Algae this crucial element and keeps your tank cleaner longer.

By virtually eliminating the UV radiation that algae requires to grow, you will keep your tank cleaner for longer and your tank will require less frequent cleanings. A clean tank means a happy fish!

SPF - What is the SPF of Window Tinting?

What would the SPF (sun protection factor) be for window film, using the same scale used by the sun screen manufacturers?

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of window films is over 100!

Since an SPF 15 allows you to stay in the sun without burning fifteen times longer than you could if you didn't use any sunscreen, the calculation, it would seem, of the SPF for window films would be fairly easy, and the numbers would be very large indeed. If the film product allows less than 1% UV transmission, the SPF would be about 100 or more. With 1.5% UV transmission, the SPF would be 66.66. With a UV transmission of 2%, the SPF would be 50. A film with a 99.9% UV block would have an SPF of 1000 or more. Simply divide 100 by the percentage of UV transmission and you would have the SPF number.

Window Films help protect you and your belongings from the suns harmful UV radiation

However, SPF numbers are actually measured biologically with tests done on subjects' skin. It is a measure of how long it takes to achieve a certain level of sunburn relative to an area of untreated skin. But it is only UVB that causes "sunburn," not UVA which window film also blocks. (UVA is suspected of causing the most virulent forms of skin cancer.) While the computation we have described above is easy to perform with known UV transmission reduction values, two things must be said:

      1) Most dermatologists don't think numbers larger than about 20 are meaningful.
      2) While it is easy to calculate the reduction in UV transmission by a window film (a thousandfold reduction with the best auto and flat glass films), actual SPF numbers are officially determined by skin testing according to an established experimental protocol. It is not permissible to make such claims about actual SPF numbers without having these skin tests performed by a qualified laboratory.

All in all, the installation of one of our high performance window films will block over 99% of the suns harmful UVB radiation, resulting in a SPF factor of well over 100.

What's Window Film? How Does it Protect Against UV Exposure?

By

When you are inside your home or car, does the thought of protecting yourself and your family from UV rays cross your mind? Chances are, it could be the furthest thing from your mind. Sure, windows do provide some protection, shielding against UVB rays, but UVA rays can easily penetrate glass with at least 50 percent of UVA rays passing through windows according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. This percentage is increased during the winter due to the angle daylight hits windows and is further intensified when light bounces off snow.

Inadequate sun protection for kids and adults is the cause of 85 percent of melanomas and 90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancers, the Skin Care Foundation reports. Furthermore, UV rays can also lead to health problems and visible signs of aging, so it’s important to guard your family’s skin anytime they could be exposed to sunlight. In addition to making a habit of putting on sunscreen daily and wearing sunglasses and other protective clothing, there’s another unique solution to consider. The nonprofit group the International Window Film Association (IWFA) recommends using window film as a way to help keep UVA and UVB rays from passing through windows. Window film offers the following benefits:
  • It blocks up to 99 percent of UVA rays providing sun protection for kids and adults in the home and car.
  • It helps create a more even temperature in the home by reducing hot spots.
  • It is easy to install and has a long lifespan.

Other benefits of window film named by the Skin Cancer Foundation include:
  • Protection for your upholstery and other belongings against sun damage.
  • Reduce glare while between 30 and 80 percent of visible light is still able to enter the home or car (depending on the type of film you choose).
  • Lower energy costs through heat reduction during hot weather while interior heat back is reflected indoors during cold weather.
  • You have the option of using safety film, which holds glass together if the window is shattered. This reduces the chance of break-ins, theft, property damage, and injuries from broken glass.

Protection from UV rays is just as important outdoors. Guard yourself and your children with sunglasses, sunscreen, hats, and protective clothing whenever you head outdoors. Check out our range sunglasses for children of all ages at Real Kids Shades.

The Sun's Damage Is Real - UV Ray's Show Accelerated Ageing

UV rays are a serious concern for daily drivers. Window films block over 99% of the sun's harmful ultra-violet radiation while also blocking heat, reducing glare, and adding comfort and style to your truck or car.

Here is the story of big rig driver Bill McElligott. After years of long haul driving the left side of his face shows severe and uneven aging. He would have been better protected with a high performance window film installed to protect his skin.

Protect yourself!

Big rig truckers get a "10-4" to use UV protectant window films to guard against skin cancer

A recent clarification to the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) highway safety regulations now allows the millions of truckers across the nation to utilize UV protecting window films on their cabs windows.

DOT eases window film restrictions on big rigs to help protect drivers against skin cancer

The change follows numerous studies showing higher than normal skin cancer rates on the left side of the face and arm. America's long haul truckers are at severe risk of sun exposure and deserve to be protected.

High performance window films will block over 99% of the suns harmful UVA rays, which have been linked to cancer. "The health and safety of America's truck drivers is of the utmost importance to American Trucking Associations," said ATA President and CEO Bill Graves. "Whether it is doing more to battle obesity and sleep apnea, or helping our drivers avoid skin cancer, ATA has consistently advocated for sensible regulations to ensure our drivers get and stay healthy."

Sun Burn Through Your Window?

You bet!

Most people associate a sun burn with red, irratable skin. But just because you don't appear sun-burned, doesn't mean that you are safe from the suns harmful rays. Despite many health organizations' efforts to clarify the difference between UVA and UVB rays, people are still confused and believe they're safe and healthy as long as they don't get a burn or stay outdoors too long.

Most of the glass in our cars, homes and businesses block the suns UVB rays, but still let through harmful UVA rays. Our high performance window films block over 99% of the suns UVA rays while reducing heat gain, glare and fading.

Drivers are particulary vulnerable since we sit so close to the glass in our vehicles. Researchers have noticed that people who spend lots of time in their cars were more likely to develop cancers on their left side.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF:

  • Consider having your car's side and rear windows tinted or laminated with a UV-filtering material such as UV film.
  • Roll up your car windows -- open windows let in even more UVA rays as well as UVB rays.
  • Drive wearing long sleeves.
  • Consider using UV film on home or workplace windows. We carry a large selection of heat-blocking, UV resistant window films. In addition to blocking harmful rays, it also helps prevent curtain and upholstery fabrics from fading.
  • Wear a sunscreen that blocks both UVB and UVA rays year-round.
  • Wear sunglasses with 100% UVA & UVB protection when driving or outdoors. The lens and retina of the eyes are extremely sensitive to sun damage.
